The software team develops the code required to autonomously run the robot. With nodes such as mission planning, vision systems, actuation, etc., members on the software team develop skills regarding high-level python programming, low-level C++ programming, ROS 2 & Docker usage, and the fundamentals of the computer science design process. Brainstorming is the process here, and tasks are shared within project groups in this subteam.

The Autonomous Robotic Vehicle Project (ARVP) was founded as a means for University of Alberta students to develop, apply, and promote robotics. Our interdisciplinary team helps teach skills in design, manufacturing, finances, machine learning and beyond. The team is divided into four subteams and currently focuses on underwater-based autonomous vehicles that are deployed at the annual RoboSub Competition held in San Diego, CA.

The mechanical team designs, manufactures, and maintains the robot’s hull, frame, claw, torpedoes, droppers, battery pods, and wiring harness. There is a large emphasis on testing and iterative design. As such, mechanical team members develop skills regarding the fundamentals of the mechanical design process, small-scale manufacturing & prototyping techniques, computer assisted part design, low-level coding with arduinos, and solidworks.

The electrical team designs, manufactures, and maintains the printed circuit boards and electrical systems used to control the robot. There are many opportunities to develop skills regarding the fundamentals of the electrical design process, soldering and wiring, printed circuit design, low-level C/C++ programming, and altium-pcb design software through various hands-on tasks. Work on the electrical team is very hands-on and electrical team members would be given tasks like circuit design, board assembly, and soldering.

From finance to safety & logistics to promotional content, work on this team varies greatly and there is interaction with all the other subteams. Since joining in June 2023, I have had the opportunity to contribute to the project on various levels. I started working with the mechanical team, designing and manufacturing parts for Arctos. Diving into the technical weeds was engaging! However, as the year went on there was a demand for help on the administrative team so I shifted my focus there. There I was given the chance to facilitate the success of the technical subteams by securing funds, planning events, and managing logistics. This is something I came to appreciate! Looking forward, I want to utilize the skills I learned at ARVP in similar technical initiatives to improve the quality of life on a global scale.

As a mechanical engineering student, I wish to develop my understanding of the mechanical industry and what it has to offer. Joining the ARVP mechanical team is allowing to to work alongside my peers as we apply our skills and knowledge to build robots. Its been enjoyable so far and I hope for a successful year!

I joined ARVP at the start of Fall 2024. I knew about them in my first year and wanted to get involved with the start of my second year. I work on the Software team, and since finishing onboarding, I've worked on developing a web based UI to view and control the robot. I'm interested in all things computer science, and I did some robotics in high school, so ARVP was a great place to learn about the more advanced concepts and software used in robotics. I've loved working in ARVP and being surrounded by very talented people, and I'm excited for future years and working on ambitious projects.
